This powerful technique yielded incredibly positive results after just one lesson.

I am a fifty-one-year-old musician and writer who has had approximately 10 1-hour sessions with Don Higdon in the Alexander Technique. Among the issues I presented when I came to him were the following: neck pain, back pain, arm pain, and extreme tension in the neck area making singing nearly impossible. I also have a chronic issue with a myoclonic disorder (uncontrolled body jerks and movement) and a related issue with chronic uncontrollable left arm clenching.

Over the course of 10 sessions with Don, I have noted the following changes:

  1. Almost complete relief of neck and back pain.
  2. Improvement in my singing technique (especially when I remember to use my body correctly), making a more relaxed sound and greater ease in reaching higher notes.
  3. Some notable abatement of left-side clenching, and a greatly increased ability to relax it at will. (something I could not do before)
  4. A noticeable decrease in level of overall stress -- especially psychological stress -- when I remember to direct.

Basically, I just feel better when I do it, and worse when I don't.

I highly recommend the Technique, and Donald Higdon as a practitioner. Don is kind, infinitely patient, has a great sense of humor, and cares deeply about what he does. He has a great compassionate sense about the ideal of perfection and the striving toward it, for both himself and for those he works with.

Sincerely,
Catherine H.

Dear Don,

Thank you for allowing me to find a new friendship with my spine & pelvis. It's been a true pleasure working with you.

Ballet Dancer and Teacher

My first Alexander lesson was in January and now, six months later I have gained more than I ever could have expected.

A former dancer, Pilates instructor, and massage therapist, I believe my body awareness has at least doubled.

Through this increased body awareness I have been given the means to release unnecessary tension from my body and discovered a peace with being in my body that I have not experienced before. The most surprising thing about the Alexander Technique is that it has given me a gracious window into accepting my humanity and given me a new freedom to be accepting of myself. Alexander Technique has brought to light how easy it is for me to get stuck in repetitive behaviors that do not serve my highest good. It also has given me some wisdom on how to break that cycle by interrupting my habitual reactions, as well as the courage and encouragement to believe that it is absolutely possible.

Don, thank you for your generosity of time and energy, your patience, wisdom, and graciousness of spirit. I am truly grateful.

Dear Caren:

It is hard to describe how just 10 sessions with Don Higdon has made a difference in my life. While having a chance to enjoy his spirit and good humor, I also got to sense his devotion to teaching the Alexander Technique.

It is clear that he cares a great deal about making a difference and he has done just that. Almost every time I sit down and/or stand up, I feel his presence reminding me to relax me neck among all the other subtle commands.

I thank you both for the opportunity to spend time with you and I will always remember my Alexander experience.

Very gratefully and sincerely,

...and a renowned teacher

I have known Don Higdon for several years now, and I have always been struck by how astute and insightful he is. He has the ability to undergo a complex psychophysical experience and draw from it a simple statement of principle - a metaphor, an epigram, a joke, something compact and immediately useful in daily life. His outlook in life is sympathetic, compassionate, and utterly creative. I have no doubt that he will develop into a fine teacher of the Alexander Technique, and I wish him every success.
